City hosts housing education session for Bonteheuwel beneficiaries

20 August 2025

The City recently held a consumer education session for first-time homeowners of its Bonteheuwel Infill housing project. These sessions are held to empower new beneficiaries with information about the practicalities of homeownership including budgeting, maintenance, drafting a will and the personal responsibilities of owning a property.

The Bonteheuwel Infill housing project is one of the City’s key Breaking New Ground (BNG) State-subsidised housing projects which will provide 273 qualifying beneficiaries and their families with a safe and dignified place to call home. The R140 million project is expected to be completed in mid-2026, if all goes according to plan.

‘Owning a home is a life-changing milestone. It provides safety and stability, peace of mind, and is an investment which will grow in value over the years to come. It is important for beneficiaries to be well informed with the knowledge and tools to properly manage and protect this important asset. This project highlights the City’s commitment to empowering residents, enabling redress and improving access to well-located housing opportunities across the metro.

‘The Bonteheuwel project is a step forward in providing safe and affordable housing while also supporting community upliftment and sustainable development in neighbourhoods across Cape Town. We thank all stakeholders in the successful rollout of this project,’ said Human Settlements Mayoral Committee Member Councillor Carl Pophaim.

Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
